Bonjour,

J'ai un essai à faire sur les social media, voilà la question et ce que j'ai écrit:

Essay: Should governments regulate social media?

In October 2020, M. Zuckerberg declared on a speech in Georgetown University, to refusing impose control on Facebook, and standing for free speech. However, social media need to stay a tolerable place, and the only other actor who can regulate it are governments. Should governments regulate social media?

Most people think that social media need to be regulated, and if the directions of the platforms don’t want to do it, governments have the right to regulate it. In fact, regulate social media can be view as the protection of the people (for example, protection against shocking contents), and in this case, regulate social media is not a right, but a duty for governments. For instance, in France, government impose an age to get an account on social media, to protect them from inappropriate content.

But if governments regulate social media, it can create problems in certain states, especially in democracies, because they also defend freedom of speech. In this case, governments have to fix a limit between freedom of speech and censorship to regulate social media, but it’s a difficult task. For example, Pablo Hasél, a Spanish singer was jailed the last month because he insulted police forces and the monarchy on Tweeter. As regard the situation, his incarceration was not a strict regulation on social media, but a way to prevent people from publishing anything on social media. But the Spanish government, which claims freedom of speech, was accused of censorship.

To respond to the problem statement, government should regulate media but at the same time fixe a limit to not encroach on freedom of speech.

Merci pour votre correction, bonne soirée, Léonie.

Bonsoir Léonie,

Essay: Should governments regulate social media?

In October 2020, M. Zuckerberg declared in a speech in Georgetown University, to refusing that he refused imposed control on Facebook and standing that he stood for free speech. (1) However, social media need to stay keep a tolerable place and the only other actor who that can regulate it are governments. Should governments regulate social media?

Most people think that social media need to be regulated and if the directions of the platforms don’t want to do it, governments have the right to regulate it them. (2) In fact, regulating (3) social media can be viewed as the protection of the people (for example, protection against shocking contents), and in this case, regulating social media is not a right, but a duty for governments. For instance, in France, the government imposes an age to get an account on social media, to protect them teenagers under sixteen (4) from inappropriate content.

But if governments regulate social media, it that can create problems in certain states, especially in democracies, because they also defend freedom of speech. In this case, governments have to fix a limit between freedom of speech and censorship to regulate social media, but it’s a difficult task. For example, Pablo Hasél, a Spanish singer was jailed the last month because he insulted police forces and the monarchy on Tweeter. As regards the situation, his imprisonment/incarceration was not a strict regulation on social media but a way to prevent people from publishing anything on social media. But the Spanish government, which claims freedom of speech, was accused of censorship.

To respond to the problem statement, government should regulate media but at the same time fix a limit to not encroach on freedom of speech.

Jean
