Thématique: the writer in his century

My presentation will deal with the theme of “The writer in his century”. Writers play a very important role in our lives. They can have a real impact, some are whistle-blowers too. Some writers don't hesitate criticizes their own society through their work in expressing their way of thinking under the form of movie, history, poem... But many books also reveal their century, first through the type of language used but also by the story itself. We can ask ourselves how writers denounce their society through their work. I will present this notion with 2 documents that we saw in classroom: “Clara’s day” by Penelope Lively, and an extract of “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett, and then, another personal document, the 1st chapter of Jane Auster’s book entitled “Pride and Prejudice”.

First of all, we will study a short story entitled "Clara's day" published by Penelope Lively in 1986. Penelope Lively was born in March 1933, she is a contemporary British writer of fiction for both children and adults. In "Clara’s day", a teenage girl takes all her clothes off in a morning assembly, she wants to attract the attention of her mother, who does not pay attention to her. She is in fact very prudish and this strip-tease is a big milestone in the girl’s life; unfortunately, the mother doesn’t care and the girl’s action is misunderstood; she is left alone with her problems, unsolved. This is a call for help: this short story is thought provoking: we must help teenagers when they need us, they can be very vulnerable. This story by Penelope Lively shows how our emotional lives at home can sometimes have an impact on the way we behave in school. Penelope Lively denounces the problems of personality of teenagers. This text has an influence on the readers but more especially on the teenagers and their parents.

Now, we will study a text that denounces a different kind of problem in society: the racism and the segregation of black’s maids in America.

The novel entitled “The Help” was written by Kathryn Stockett in 2009. Kathryn Stockett was born in 1969, in Jackson and she is an American novelist. She is known this novel, which is about the story of Black maids who suffer from discrimination in Jackson, Mississippi under the Jim Crow Laws. The novel was written in the context of racial segregation in the United States in the 1960s. The testimony opens with a chapter written in the first person from the point of view of an Africa-American maid, Aibileen. Aibileen is a maid who takes care of children and cleans. Her first job since her own 24-year-old son, Treelore, died from an accident on his job, is tending the Leefolt household and caring for their toddler, Mae Mobley. The writer uses vernacular language to make it more realistic. In the 1960’s, interracial contact was forbidden. Skeeter, the white student will bridge the gap between the black world and the white world. She is tolerant, unmarried, and graduate and she loves black maids. Through the book that she wrote with Aibileen and Minnie, about the discrimination against black maids during their century, we can see now that, there is a raise of awareness of the reader thanks to the writer.

Finally, we will see a text where the author denounces society but ironically.

Jane Austen was born in 1775 and she died in 1817. She belonged to the gentry in Hampshire. She was a spinster but wrote only about families and couples. Her novels are “comedies of manners”. Pride and Prejudice was written in 1813. The plot of the novel unfolds during the age of the Romantic Movement. Austen used fiction to describe social reality within her own time and class (the gentry and professional classes of southern England in the early 19th century)... She examines society with irony. In this text, she describes a society she knows well, and of which she explores and criticizes the limits of, especially as far as women’s position in that society and the institution of marriage are concerned. In this excerpt we have chosen, Mrs Bennett contemplates marrying Mr Bingley to one of her daughters, although none of the young characters have ever met. Jane Austen, gave the heroines of her novels, and therefore women, a voice that they didn’t have in the society of her time: Elizabeth Bennet, one of the daughters of the family, embodies the independent modern heroine who refuses to submit to social conventions and wants to marry for love. Her character implicitly represents a criticism of the society of the time, when women were treated as children and had no rights, including the right to write novels. Jane Austen and other female authors like Charlotte Brontë thus defied the patriarchal system.

To conclude, we have seen that the three authors of these documents reveal the society of their time and above all the problems of the period they lived in. These documents correspond to this notion. I think Katheryn Stockett is the one who denounced one of the biggest problems of society in the 1960s. It is a poignant story that can change the mentalities of the readers, it’s the reason why I enjoy this notion.

Bonjour,
