Bonjour Monsieur,

The notion I’m going to deal with is “Space and exchanges”.

I’m going to talk about the notion space and exchanges studied in a united entitled “The new Americans “ .To start with ,I would like to give a definition of space and exchanges :

The different space of the world are nowadays more and more connected to each other .The exchanges can appear on many forms :people ,trade ,information. The documents we’ve studied in class spoke mainly about immigration to the USA. Immigration definitely involves the idea of space as immigrants are moving across countries! They leave their home to get a new start in America

Moreover, it means exchanges: Immigrants arrive with their cultural background.

My presentation will fall 2 parts

First of all, I will concentrate on the history of the US because America was built upon immigration.

Then, can immigration be an asset for the USA?

1) The US appears to be a nation of immigrants .It was the first destination for immigrants in the past, it is a favourite destination for immigrants today and it may still be the destination number one in the fuctur. Before the Titanic the Mayflower was the ship that transported mostly English puritans and separatist ,known as the Pilgrims from Plymouth in the 17 th.These Europeans were the first colonist to emigrate to America .Between 1815 and 1915 30milion Europeans came to the US for differents reasons: for example ,potato famine ,religious freedom, the age of steam ,Rusian pogroms. America offered the opportunity to make a life in a land, a new society in wictch immigrants could have a better quality of life .Moreover,we studied two charts .The first documents shows the different wave of immigration from the beginning of the twentieth century to the beginning to the twenty first century. We can notice that the beginnings of the two centuries are quite similar in terms of numbers. However the origins of the immigrants are different .the greater number of people came from Europe whereas today they came from Asia and Latin America. The second chart gives us more details about immigrants from Asia and Latin America: In fact, immigrants from Latin America came from Mexico and Asian immigrants came from the Phillipins China and India .We observe that since the sixties the number of immigrants has reached .So both space and exchanges were deeply involved in the constitution of America as we know it today.

2) To begin, I would say that immigration in before all an asset for the diversity of the USA. Indeed with the arrival of a new population from all around the world the US will be enriched by many cultures. America become a multicultural country .Nowadays the US enjoys a really diverse society .Moreover from an economic point of view immigration is positive. In the text entitled “I wasn’t unwelcomed” written by Chang Rea Lee the narrator is the main charater. He comes from Asia he describes a dealy naitime in Bedlay Run, the little town where he has settled. When he arrived a few people seemed to notice him. But after some years people seemed to appreciate to respect him. The narrator enjoys being accepted and is glad to bled in a community. Moreover the “American Dream” bas been present from the start immigrants contributed to keep the dream alive. It remains hopeness for the fuctur. However, we can also notice, some drawbacks about immigration for America .First of all it seems obvious that immigrants are often rejected by the host population. Sometimes they don’t tolerate the different with the newcomers and it often causes many conflicts. In addition we can also say that immigration is harmful for a country when it’s illegal immigration.

To conclude I think the USA is still considered as a land of opportunity, a country of hope. American people can feel integrated because they have managed to mise, to blend in the community .We swathe new face of America on the cover of an American magazine called Time. The portrait is a combination of a Asian African and Anglo Saxon traits. We can notice lots of arguments which make immigration an asset for the USA.

I found this subject particularly interesting as I learned a lot about the history of immigration in the USA especially with unit the “new Americans “.
