Bon dimanche Stan. « UN Enterrement à Ornans » by Gustave Courbet This painting has been painted in oils, by Gustave Courbet in 1850 and is exhibited in the “Musée d’Orsay” in Paris. The dimensions of this canvas are very important: 315cm on 668cm. Gustave Courbet was born in 1819 in Ornans in France and he is dead in 1877 in Switzerland. He was a French painter, and one of the leader of the Realist movement in France in the 19th century. “Un enterrement à Ornans” caused a scandal, on the one hand because it is an ugly scene, and on the other hand because it was considered like a banal scene in everyday without importance. In addition the huge dimensions, were at that time, reserved for the mythological and historical scene. There are 17 characters on this painter. They are divided in about three groups: the officiants, the men, and the women. On the left we can see the officiants, they are twelve. In this group there is the priest, who is reading a breviary. He wears the funeral costume. We can notice three sacristans, who are dressed in white, one of them holds the cross, and four men who carry the coffin. There are two altar boys, two beadles and a gravedigger too. In the middle there is the group of the men, we can suppose that the two men in the foreground of this group belong to upper middle-class because of their clothes. The women are on the right , most of them were white headdress. Furthermore many of them hold a handkerchief and cry into it. In front of these women, we can see a dog. In the background we can notice cliffs. Ornans is a small village, at 25 kilometres far from Besançon, in France. This burial takes place in the new cemetery of Ornans, outside the village. Gustave Courbet chose to show us a funeral ritual as realist as possible. The different subjects of this canvas are the religion and the death: in the foreground, next to the dug, we can see a skull which is the allegory of the death. There is the cross too, it is the allegory of the religion. This painting is mainly dark but there are still some white shade for example the clothes of the altar boys; there are also some cornflower tones and red tones ( for the beadles). The person who is buried here is still unknown. To conclude “Un enterrement à Ornans”, in spite of the critics, is a very famous painting, which marked the beginning of the Realistic movement in France.

C'est vrai que je mets beaucoup de virgules. Lorsque je lis j'ai tendance à vouloir ponctuer ma phrase. Bon dimanche à vous également, Stan.
