In 1974, on November 13th, at 7.30 p.m., a young woman called Sandy Woolword, working as a laboratory technician at Wopshield,

the biggest US atomic fuel producer, drove out of the gates of the plant after work. She was heading towards the Holiday Innthirty miles away where she had an appointment with a New-York -Times journalist, Dan Bromley. She was to give him some

confidential papers about the lack of safety precautions at the factory. Half an hour later, her car, out of control, skidded on the

road and crashed into a tree. Sandy was killed instantly. In the meantime Dan Bromley waited impatiently for the secret documents

Karen had promised him. An hour later, he heard on the news about the terrible accident; he rushed towards the crash site; the

vehicle had surprisingly already been towed away to a garage. According to a police officer, there was a thick envelope containing

documents on the back seat. The next morning when he arrived at the garage, it had disappeared.

For Wopshield, Sandy was considered a troublemaker because, after noticing the absence of serious protection, she had become

a militant trade union activist and had organised two demonstrations.

The result of the police enquiry led to the conclusion that Sandy had fallen asleep at the wheel, or that she had been the victim

of a case of hit-and–run but the skid marks left on the surface of the road had disappeared the following day. For Dan Bromley,

the theory of the accident is unacceptable.

Je vous remercie pour la fiche de mot,je sais que je ne suis nulle en anglais,mais je n'ai eu en trois ans quasiment que très peu de cours
