    Spaces and Exchanges/aide

Bonsoir, Pouvez-vous me corriger ma notion d'anglais sur "Spaces and exchanges" s'il-vous-plaît? Merci d'avance pour vos réponses! Intro : I’m going to talk about Spaces and Exchanges. First of all, I would like to give a definition of an exchange. An exchange is the act of giving or receiving something in substitution for something else. In today’s modern-day world these exchanges can take several forms: economic – work exchanges, exchange of goods, trading across borders, cultural – exchange of ideas, information, education, movement of people – immigration, student exchanges, gap years… Here I want to talk about globalisation which refers to a process through which the exchange of goods and services, capital, people and cultures develops on a global scale and creates increasingly stronger interactions between different parts of the world. So we can wonder what impact globalization has on international exchanges. First, we are going to discuss a cartoon “Problems of Globalization” by H. Wuerker then we will study another cartoon “bet you didn’t dream it” and finally we will talk about Gap Year. The first document I have chosen is a political cartoon which illustrates what the artist calls the "Problems of Globalization," as it depicts a family on vacation who has returned home from an international vacation which involved little international interaction. We can see parents with their son. The father say : “we got these cool hats at niketown” his wife continue : “and this great shirt at the disney store in london” and the son finish : “After a great dinner at mcdonalds in rome, we found these neat shorts at the gap”. Instead, everything from their souvenirs to the food they ate came from large, international corporations rather than from locales they actually visit. In the second comic there are two separate rooms; for the children of the "99%" percent and for the "1%." There is always an African American figure with the letters "MLK" on his sleeve which must mean he represents the late Martin Luther King Jr. The caption reads, "BET YOU DIDN'T DREAM THIS." The message that this comic is trying to convey is, MLK invisioned a world where children of every ethnicity would be joined together, not be their social status. I think it also stressed the difference between North and South, between poverty and riches. A gap year is a year before going to college or university and after finishing high school or taking a year off before going into graduate school after completing a bachelor as an undergraduate. It is also known as a sabbatical year. During this time students may engage in advanced academic courses, extra-academic courses and non-academic courses, such as yearlong pre-college math courses, language studies, learning a trade, art studies, volunteer work, travel, internships, sports and more. Gap years are sometimes urged as a way for students to become independent and learn a great deal of responsibility prior to engaging in university life. So it’s an exchange between students in many countries. To conclude we can say that globalization have positives and negatives impacts. In fact, the globalization implies an access, for companies and consumers, to products from different countries, and the knowledge of those. Also, with the globalization, information can be exchanges faster. And, people are more open and tolerant to each other, and are being able to live in different parts of the world. But, the acknowledged benefits that accrue to some segments of our society must be weighed against the inequalities that globalization creates in others. In fact, rich begin richest, but non-rich became poorer, and live in poor conditions.

    Idea of progress

Bonsoir, Merci beaucoup ...Scientists are working more and more on the usefulness of DNA. So they create or modify it to avoid genetic diseases: it’s the technique of PGD: one-implantation Genetic Diagnosis. In fact, scientists feat (c’était une faute de frappe j’ai mis feat pour “exploiter” non?) many embryos in a fertility lab of birth. And among all these embryos, they chose the healthiest before implanting it in the mother’s womb. So when he was born, the baby would not have any disease. This technique is also used to cure people. To illustrate that, we have the story of Molly and her little brother Adam. Indeed, we have read about a feat which explains how advances in medicine can save people. In fact, Molly had a rare illness which needed transplantation (in the bone marrow). So scientists chose the most compatible one among many embryos created by her parents and they fell back on the PGD and it gave birth to Adam only to cure his sister. We call it a “bébé-médicament” and Adam was the first one in the world. This has given rise to moral and ethical problems.

    Idea of progress

Bonjour, Pouvez-vous me corriger ma notion sur Idea of progress? Merci pour vos réponses: Intro: I am going to talk about the notion of idea of progress. First of all, I would like to give a definition of progress. Progress is a global transition of the world from its current state to a better state in all fields but especially in science. Indeed, progress always refers to scientists and engineers, workers who want to improve the society we live in and try to give happiness to everyone. So their aim is perfection. They want the world to be as perfect as possible, like a utopia. Nowadays, people can design their babies with these new scientific advances. But babies are humans and we usually design things. So this concept can be a retreat for humanity. In this case, can we accept all new scientific advances? Is this progress only a positive thing? First, we are going to discuss the story of Molly Nash, then we will study an audio document about a blind man and finally we will talk about a cartoon named Cartoon’R us. Scientists are working more and more on the usefulness of DNA. So they create or modify to avoid genetic diseases: it’s the technique of PGD: one-implantation Genetic Diagnosis. In fact, scientists neat many embryos in a fertility lab of birth. And among all these embryos, they choose the healthiest before implanting it in the mother’s womb. So when he was born, the baby would not have any disease. This technique is also used to cure people. To illustrate that, we have the story of Molly and her little brother Adam. Indeed, we have read a feat which explains how advances in medicine can save people. In fact, Molly had a rare illness which needed transplantation (in the bone marrow). So scientists chose the most compatible one among many embryos created by her parents and they fell back on the PGD and it gave birth to Adam only to cure his sister. We call it a “baby-medizin” and Adam was the first one in the world. This has given rise to moral and ethical problem. Besides the technique of PGD, scientists have found another technique to cure human diseases: it’s the genetic therapy. Indeed, we have listened in class to an audio document. It was a report on BBC news. It was about a man who was going to be blind. But after many researches, a doctor found a technique to cure that man. Actually, that man had a faulty gene in his eyes. Because of that, the cells at the back of his eyes have been dying and these injection of genes have revitalized some of the cells that had stopped working. Now, thanks to this advance, the man can see again. So all these examples show us that scientific progress is a really good thing because it allows to cure or avoid many diseases. But scientists don’t have stopped here and continued research in science even if it can jeopardize the future. So people are beginning to worry. Actually, scientists want to make the world look like a utopia. So they want to have perfect people. Nowadays, they succeed in that because we can have people as perfect as possible with breakthrough in genetics. Scientists can increase IQ and modificate the skin’s, eye’s color, etc of the future baby. We can create embryos without any diseases and parents can choose the appearance of their babies. So we can say that parents can “design” their babies. But this word can’t be used for babies otherwise we assimilate babies to things. The word “design” for humans is striking. It refers to the industrial revolution and techniques that we use in the car industry. Indeed, we create many cars or other things and we reject the defectives. It’s the same here with embryos. To illustrate that, I chose a cartoon that we have seen in class: clones’R us. It was of a conveyor belt where newly produced human are appearing one by one. Four of them are exact duplicates but the last one is different. Indeed, he is little and thin whereas the others are tall and muscular. So the faulty clone gonna be dropped into a huge garbage dumpster: here the cartoonist exposes the dangers of selective breeding. He is suggesting that accepting any kind of advance can jeopardize our society. Cncls: To conclude, we can say that scientific progress can be really good in medicine but it really can be dangerous in other fields. So I think we must put limits to progress to preserve humanity. Thank you for your listening.

    Myths and heroes

Bonsoir, Tout d'abord merci beaucoup pour votre correction. Est-ce mieux ainsi? Intro: I would like to talk about myths and heroes. First of all, I would like to give a definition of both notions: to me a hero is someone who has done something incredible to defend a value or an idea. He or she is not necessarily strong or brawny but rather intelligent, compassionate and generous. A myth is a real or imaginary story that ensues from a Greek or Latin legend which is made to explain the mysterious aspects of real life and it often deals with the story of a hero. Some may have factual origins, while others are completely fictional. So we can wonder who can be considered a hero. First I will talk about a cartoon which represents various kinds of heroes then I would like to talk about a poem: « The hero » by Siegfried SASSOON and finally about NYC firefighters on the eleventh of September. The cartoon “hero?” deals with the topic of what a hero is really. We can see a superhero, an athlete and a senior. I think the first one can be defined as a hero because he uses his own powers to save others. Regarding the second one, I think he is definitely not a hero. He does sport for his body and maybe his family will be proud of him but it’s not something that changes people’s lives. The senior has given his entire life maybe to defend his country and that is a great act of bravery, so I consider him a hero. The second document is a poem which was written by Siegfried SASSOON during the First World War. It gets a handle on the story of Jack’s mother who is reading a letter given by an Officer. She has just learnt the death of her son who was a soldier. She is first at a loss, devastated, but at the same time she is proud of her son. In the second stanza the Officer appears. He lies about Jack. He said he was a “glorious boy” only to comfort his mother. She lives knowing that her son was a good soldier and he lost his life for a good cause. Here the officer feels satisfied because Jack’s mother is proud of her son and because he eases her pain. But in the third and last stanza, the author gives us the officer’s version. We learn that Jack was a coward, an unmanly soldier. He wanted to escape from the war. In this poem we can see that Jack was not really a hero but it also dehumanizes Jack. He is compared to an animal sent to slaughter and then reduced to “small bits”. It denounces the horror of the war; this poem is pacific, an anti-war poem. The third and last document I have chosen is a recording which handles the topic of firefighters on the eleventh of September two thousand and one. They gave their lives to save people during the terrorist attacks. We heard one of the firefighter’s sister who died into the fire. She feared the unknown, she was heartbroken. She said all was blurry. This kind of person can also be considered a great hero. It didn’t bother them to die for others and that is another kind of bravery. To conclude we can say that a perfect hero doesn’t exist but there are various kinds. He can be an old or a young person, strong or weak in brief he or she must do something out of the ordinary to save or defend values as the senior and the soldiers have done. Thank you for your listening.

Merci d'avance.
