Bonsoir,

The song I'm going to present you is the second track on the band's 1984 album. The song received mixed critical reviews at the time, but it finally became a big success.

In this song, Bono is speaking about Martin Luther King and about people throughout history who have died because they preached of love and the equality of all men.

The song was initially written as a song condemning US president Ronald Reagan and his pride in the military strength of the U.S but the band changed his mind to write something more positive.

Before listening to the song, I’m going to say some words about Martin Luther King.

Martin Luther King was born in Atlanta, in the USA on 15 January 1929. He was an American pastor, activist and humanitarian. He was best known for improving civil rights by using nonviolent civil disobedience.

King worked hard to make people understand that blacks(on a le droit de dire ?), but also all races (?)should always be treated equally to white people. He gave speeches to encourage African Americans to protest without using violence.

Martin Luther King had made enemies by working for civil rights

He was shot in Memphis on 4 April 1968 by a man (James Earl Ray) while he was standing on the balcony of his motel room.

Now, we are going to listen to the song.

Some parts of the song are difficult to understand. The difficulty of the song comes from the meaning of the sentences that are full of historical references. Sometimes these references aren't very clear.

Moreover, the grammar is not standard English. For example: "one man come" instead of "one man comes"...."one man he resist" instead of "one man resists". The reason is perhaps to sound better.

Another difficulty from the song is the expression "one man". It may refer to several different people, it isn't sometimes very clear. This is why there may be several interpretations.

Thank you !!!! Have a good evening !

On y ajoute le nom people ou men ou women, but also all races should always be treated equally to white people. He gave speeches to encourage African Americans to protest without using violence.

Good job! 👍

Cela m'aide beaucoup, vraiment !
