Bonjour,

Je vais passer mon oral d'anglais. Ce serait super si quelqu'un pouvait corriger mes fautes et m'aider pour le bac. Je vous remercie par avance.

When migrants are stuck in Calais, we talk of "a jungle"... Jungle, seriously?

We all know what a jungle is: a tropical forest with a lot of wild animals

It is not a place you want to live in, it is a place in which you try to survive.

So the Calais Jungle you certainly see on the news, what it is about 6 000 migrants stuck near the English border, a couple of kilometers away from the town Calais.

We talk so much about it at the moment because of the rise in court decisions to evacuate part of the camp and to destroy it with backhoes.

Before we go into details, it is important to take the time to explain what this Jungle is and why it exists.

We can simply see it as a migrant and refugee camp that was built little by little next to Calais. But it started a lot earlier that most people think At this time, there was an influx of people coming from Kosovo which was at war and we created a reception center at Sangatte, a town next to Calais. The State requisitioned a warehouse of 27 000 m² which belonged to Eurotunnel.

The idea was for the migrants to be able to wait in the warehouse until they got the necessary authorizations. However, it became increasingly difficult to obtain the authorizations, so people got stuck. We ended up with 1 800 people in a center that could only welcome 800.

So that you get the idea: in 3 years, about 68 000 migrants went through Sangatte.

So there was a lot of travelling. This lasted until 2002.

Then it was decided to close the Sangatte center and to destroy it because a solution had finally been found!

No I'm joking; politicians only destroyed it for the symbolic. In fact, the closure of the center gave way to what we call the "Calais Jungle".

So since the camp was created, the problem was never solved. It only changed name which confused the public. What is new is the massive influx of refugees

There is a question: why do they all go to Calais?! Actually, they want to go to England.

46 % of Calais migrants declared having followed advice from their community in choosing their destination. And 38 % had a family member already living in England. So yes, technically, the UK is much more attractive to migrants than France is: they have family there, they speak English, and it is easier to find a job... Thus, they are not aiming to integrate in France which is also part of the problem.

They live in a rather violent environment, at all levels: police violence, extreme rights campaigners violence, violence between migrants; the situation is complicated, especially for women and children. A couple of charities like Médecins du monde or Médecins sans frontières denounced dangerous threats to women's health and rights.

Smugglers are profiting from this situation as well as occupying the area too.

These guys have developed a real business.

It is even worst in Calais because the life of the population is directly impacted. The Calais mayor, as spokeswoman, speaks of hostage-taking of the Calais population. This is understandable.

There are numerous arguments: feeling of insecurity, the perception of a large influx in neighboring hospitals because of way of life in the camps, and above all people are just at the end of their rope! These guys have been facing this problem for 15 years! Calais has 72 000 inhabitants, we talked of about 6 000 migrants earlier, so they represent a bit less than 10 % so obviously, this creates tensions. The population living thanks to tourism. Nowadays, both retailers and restaurants owners are facing a difficult situation and are suffering from the image of war zone spread by the Medias. In the last couple of months anti-migrants protests have become frequent in Calais.

To understand Calais better, we are going to have to zoom back and look at the problem more globally. Calais is a direct consequence of the migrant crisis which has been rocking Europe since about 2010.

Since January 2016 more than 100 000 migrants arrived in Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.

More than 90 % of these 100 000 arrived in Greece who is obviously not able to welcome them properly. In fact, Calais is a tension point of a much more global crisis. This global crisis is first of all a political crisis. Europe is Germany, mainly for economic and demographic reasons chose to welcome more than 1 million of migrants but countries like Hungary don't even want to hear about migrants

The decisions are being taken at the level of each country.

And each country's decision impacts the neighboring countries. This is the domino effect.

Maybe we can do something about it. We have an undesirable situation with no simple solution.

So to find ideas, it is simple, let's look back at some of these problems. Firstly the smugglers problem which I consider quite serious because they indirectly encourage the influx. They have everything to gain from people wanting to go to England. So if we manage to dismantle smuggler networks, we will dampen the current Calais phenomenon. Indeed, a lot of migrants are regretting ever to have come here and want to go back home. This is a real problem: information. Then another problem is the European discord. For now, Europe only manages to agree to go ask Turkey to keep the migrants in exchange for financial help and other concessions. For the rest, Europe is torn apart. I think Europe is made just for this type of problems.

The Calais problem is unlucky: it spreads on tens of years, rather local; all the ingredients are here for people to forget about it. If a real solution is to be found, it will be outside of Calais! It resides in peace. Calais makes us realize that we live in a globalised world. What happens in a country at the other end of the world can impact a town in the north of France. We should feel more concerned about these problems, and before they reach the magnitude we see nowadays. Whether we like it or not, we live in a world where the problem of others becomes increasingly ours as well.

Merci pour votre aide!
