I’m going to talk about the notion of Spaces & Exchanges. First of all, I would like to give a definition of ‘Spaces et exchanges’ The notion of space has considerably evolved since end of the Second World War With the revolution brought by the transports, the people may reside far away from their work and also travel across the globe to find new markets or for their personal experience. For some others, in some countries like Africa, getting away seems the only option. Leaving one’s country to find a better life was for good most of the time. Exchanges are acts of giving one thing and receiving another in return. They are transactions between individuals such as payments, purchases, negotiations. It can be communicative exchanges with the use of social networks and websites spaces and exchanges are intimately linked, in fact we exchange (travel, emigrate, speak, communicate, give, receive) in real space (countries, cities, borders) or fictitious (internet, social networks). I'm going to speak about immigration in America We will ask : What are the reasons of immigration ? To illustrate the notion, I have chosen three documents which are "Immigration waves to the US", "Focus on a nation of immigrants" and "A boy’s journey", firstly, we see the history and the causes of immigration, then we will talk about the travel conditions of the migrants and why they find that their lives will be better in the USA. At the beginning, the United States is still today one of the preferred destinations of migrants. Sometimes at their peril. The documents "Immigration waves to the USA" and "Focus on a nation of immigrants" talk about the history and the causes of immigration. It started in 1492 with the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. Peoples who came to America during a vast migration from Europe to others parts of the world. In this migration, millions of Europeans left their homeland to settle in new countries. Almost 2/3 of them came to the United States. The country of origin of immigrants was Spain, England, France, Germany and Africa. The African immigrants came as captives on slave ships. America is a multiethnic, multicultural country. They are three factors in migrations -"Profit or mercantilism" with the London merchants in 1607 -"Religious persecutions" with the puritans in 1620 -"A dream of democracy" Finally, the document "A boy's journey" is an extract from an autobiography. Written by Seymour Rechzeit a Polish Jewish boy who sings. He was in a poor family. The boy tells his journey and the reasons why he moved to the USA with his father. They thought there are more opportunities out there. The plan was that him and his father would make enough money to bring to America the rest of the family. The trip was very long, hard and dangerous. The conditions of travel in boats were miserable. Peoples were packed on the deck of the boat. There wasn't good hygiene. The immigrants have to face a lot of dangers and difficulties on their way to America. Some persons on board were sick and there wasn't doctor to look at them. Their thought was Life was better for them in the USA than in their country of origin because in the USA everything was new, there were no social barriers. People immigrated to USA because they were looking for wealthy, freedom, religious toleration, a better life and because they were escaping from poverty, and economic hardship in their own countries. They want to live their American dream is that to say, starting in the poverty, work hard to become richer. We can link these three documents to the notion of spaces and exchanges because there is displacement of a population to another destination for various reasons.
