Merci d'avance, Eva Now I’m going to talk you about Places and Forms of Power. Power is the ability to control others, events or resources; the ability to make things happen despite obstacles, resistance or opposition. It can lead to conflicts between those who have power and those who don’t. Is it possible to resist an abuse of power by using counter power? And what sort of problems can abuse of power lead to? Firstly, we will talk about Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, two important blacks’ people. Secondly, we will see consequences of their actions for their freedom and the freedom of black people. Rosa Parks is a black woman who refused to let her seat to a white man. On her autobiography, “My Story”, she explains what happen to her when she was on a bus in the evening in Alabama the 1st of December 1955. The driver asked Rosa and other blacks’ people to stand up so that all the white passengers could all seat down. Rosa decided to disobey because she was tired and she was fed up with being discriminated against all the time, she though it was unfair to be treated like this for being black. She is stressed out and worried because she doesn’t really what expect: she is afraid of being arrested but she could also be ill-treated. Finally, she was arrested. Martin Luther King was a black doctor who fought for black’s people Civil Rights. He is famous for the Montgomery bus boycott to defend the voting right. In his motto, he explains that whatever happens, whatever your abilities, you have to do something, even if you cannot do incredible. The result of his struggle is the Civil Right Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The consequences of their act and of their resistance are multiple. We studied a video, which is a TV report and is about MLK. They speak about a comic book about non-violence and he appears as a superhero. It is to teach young Egyptians about the power of non-violence and was published in 1958 but created in 1956. It illustrates the angering struggle for social injustice. In 1958 it was the beginning of the civil movement. The project started five months after Rosa Park’s story and was created by Alfred Hassler. In the text “Civil right heroes” from Julian Borger, it explains how Rosa Park’s and Lillie Mae Bradford’s actions (who is another black woman who seat on a white seat 4 years before Rosa Park’s story) marked the beginning of the end for segregation in the South. Rosa Park became a civil right icon but she had a criminal record, even if she was treated like a president after her death. Many people had a criminal record because they disobeyed racist law like Jim Crow laws. But when the Alabama Senate decided to abolished Jim Crow laws and claimed to move on, that marked to change the world and the segregation’s story. It decided to vote on a bill that will offer a formal pardon to anyone arrested under Jim Crow laws and expunge their records. The abolition for the Jim Crow laws changed the world and the History of segregation. It allows to become full citizens. Thanks to people who want to change their story like Rosa Parks and MLK, USA could change his story too and progressed toward the democracy. In 2008, Barack Obama was the first black man to have become president of the USA. The song for Barack Omabam, “Rosa sat” sum up all the story of their struggle, with the beginning, when Rosa sat, Martin could walk, so Barack could run.
