SPACES AND EXCHANGES

In 1492, Christophe Colomb was looking for China and discovers another continent: America. In 1607, British merchants came to make money and they established the first colony. From 1619, Black slaves came as labor force. From 17th century, Protestants sought refuge because they were persecuted and poor Europeans came to work. Then, little by little, America became a land of refuge which all seemed possible. In this way, who really benefits from immigration to the USA? First, we will see that immigrants take advantages of the immigration, but we will see that Americans take advantages of that too.

Firstly, America is for immigrants the land of self-made men: people who started poor and became rich and famous. In fact, it’s the American Dream, a way to improve your life. The concept was created by Horatio Alger, a writer who wrote «Ragged dick” a novel published in 1867. It is the story about a poor orphan boy who worked hard to achieve his goal. In a way, the American Dream allows making big money and becoming famous without race, religion, sex or class should be a barrier to success. Immigrants want to come in America to find better living conditions, to have a better work condition, or to achieve a dream. But to achieve their dream, they need to be optimism, energy and ambition because they need to work hard and also optimism because it’s not always easy so they mustn’t give up. The song “American Land” of Bruce Springsteen is about this American Dream, but it talks about the very hard and dangerous work that immigrants have to do to achieve their dream. We understand that there is a lot of disillusion because there is a parallel between “diamonds in the sidewalks” and “they died I the fields and factories”.

But Americans take advantages of immigration too. In fact, on the picture “Mexican Wall Relations” we studied in class, we can see that officially the USA don’t accept the powerless Mexicans but they unofficially accept them because they need they. They are almighty. On another picture of Joe Heller, Mexican have to do the menial jobs that Americans refuse to do, such as cleaning, dish-washing, gardening or meat-packing… Finally, American doesn’t need to do the dirty work. We see that a police-officer is used to respect the law and have the law respected. However, he is asked by the government to stop controlling immigration, so to stop doing his job properly. To finish with this second part, we studied “Hablas Español”, an article published in 2012. It is about Los Angeles and Miami; two cities with a lot of Hispanics, so most people speak Spanish so English is progressively being replaced by Spanish. But immigration boosts the local business and economy.

As a conclusion, immigration hasn’t a real negative impact on unemployment because it boosts the economy. Immigrants and America have a relationship bases on the exchanges of good services. In fact, immigrants lower prices for products, so they boost the local economy because it’s created jobs. Finally, it’s a win-win relation-ship. However, nowadays, USA count around 43 millions of migrants, and 14 millions of illegal immigrants…
