Je remercie à l’avance les personnes qui prendront le temps de m’aider. In this presentation I will talk about dystopia. A dystopia is a story which takes place in an imaginary society in the future and it is often described a dehumanized world, where life is extremely difficult and peoples feels trapped and starts to question the existing social and political system. In class, we have studied two extracts from the novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” written by Margaret Atwood and published in 1985. The novel occurs in the future where women have been deprived of their political, economics and legal rights and most of them are sterile because of high levels of pollution. Offered, the main character, it is one of the few people, who are still fertile so she must to be a handmaid and become pregnant for the Commander and his wife. So, how ordinary things becomes extraordinary things in a world where women’s right are prohibited? First, I will focus on the difficulty of forming relationship between woman and man and then, I will explain on books, play games are the representatives of freedom with my personal document, who is a book illustration by Balbusso Sisters. First, I am going to talk about the difficulty of forming relationship between the two main characters: The Commander and Offred. At first sight, the Commander is the master and Offred is his handmaid. He seems to have all the power whereas Offred is weak in front of him, for example she compares herself to a small child in a world too huge for her, on line 62-63 in the extract 1; “ I feel as if my feet (…) aren’t touching the floor.” Furthermore, when they are playing the game Scrabbles, Offred is determined to take advantage in the game for a little bit of power. But also the game of Scrabbles, highlights this power struggle who is letting the other win, as we can see at line 117 “ I win the first game, I let him win the second”. Nevertheless, the power struggle of Offred is more easy than she believe because the Commander have also his weakness. Secondly, their relationship evolves at the same time they play. Offred notices when the Commander uses the pronoun “we” in extract 2 (l.137), the italics reveals how important this word is for her. Moreover, at the debut of this extract, the invitation of the Commander and “his studied pose” that can be found at line 32 shows his nervousness. To conclude this part, we can say that all the Commander “needs someone to talk, to kiss, share secret and his forbidden room” with. In this dystopia world, the handmaid is not allowed to have a one-on-one with her Commander, that’s explain the difficult of relationship but books and game are also important things in that world. Next, I am going to talk about book and play game are the representatives of freedom. Firstly, a handmaid, in that story is not allowed to read or play game like Scrabble, all of this activities who are totally normal for us become a miracle for Offred. In the extract 1 and after the invitation of the Commander, there is a different world behind the door of this room, what keeps her away from knowledges. This room is also a link to her happier past, when women were free do to what they wanted which is shown throughout the extract 2 who is written in the past perfect, there have an accumulation ; “had nearly forgotten”, “had long before”… Secondly, with personal document, we can see behind Offred “all around the wall are bookcase” (l.26) with the accumulation “Books and books and books” who explain that there have too many books there. But also this scene represent the debut of her freedom because she is surrounded by forbidden things in this society. To put it in a nutshell, dystopia of this history shows us a society where women are not free, they don't have the right to do other activities like read or write except be a handmaid but those who break these laws such as Offred thanks to the Commander, they will rediscover the world through things which are considered basic but for them will be amazing. Moreover, there will show them what is the true freedom or their happy past.

Pour autant que je puisse en juger, ton analyse est pertinente mais elle est entachée de trop de fautes dont certaines appellent des révisions sérieuses. Bonne chance pour ton oral.
