Cordialement et en vous remerciant par avance Choice of subject : explain why you have choosen this subject : scientific interesr, interest for you, for your peers The subject i choose for my oral presentation is the diversity of sexual behaviour in animals. Heterosexuality is , for a lot of human qualified as a norm in the world, but it is an anthropomorphic view. The animals haven’t always this sexuality and it's what i want to bring forward. People often claim that certain things are wrong or that certain actions should not be done because doing so would be “unnatural : that comes from our society. In fact, in some cultures it exists polyandry, polygyny or polygamy and that is accepted and have explanations but in our European civilisations it's less difficult to be received. Moreover I would like to be an ethologist, a researcher who worked about animals behaviour and so it could be very interesting for my future job to have informations on it. I'm not a specialist of a specific animals and all interest me : make an exhaustive presentations with different animals is for me something pleasant . Plus, I don't know all the different kind of sexuality that exists and that interest me. In some schoolclasses, we spoke about infanticide, sexual coersion or other sexual behaviour and i would like to do more research on it and have explanations : why is there some crual act in nature ? Are there scientific explanations ? So I would like to conclude this oral presentation by a debate and so all can speak and tell their point of view : they'll have a little view of what happen in nature and why. So we can spoke about what is really a natural sexual behaviour for them and what they think about the animals behaviour (in sexual cannibalism, infanticide, necrophilic fertilization …) ? outline of the presentation : We’ve all heard the horror stories of sexual cannibalism in the animal world. In the other side, lot of people critized homosexuality or other strange behaviour in our actual society and say that's unnatural but infanticide, necrophilic behaviour and sexual coercion are example of what happened in animals community. We can't also say that something is unnatural : it exists in nature and a lot of animals use this kind of behaviour. There are always scientific explanations of why they make it and it's commonplace : in animals it exist for example sexual coercicion and female accept it because the dominant have « good genes » for her offspring ». On a level of pure biological significance, it makes sense for a female to mate as much as possible with the most aggressive male, so that she can have offspring with his genetic characteristics. An other example,, a crual example i'll take is the infanticide : it's a common act in primates community : w hen a takeover happens the new dominant male kills all the existing offspring. The scientific explanation is that the abrupt halt to lactation brings his new ladies into their estrous cycle, meaning that he can get to work creating some offspring of his own. So we would like to conclude by a debate : what is really a natural sexual behaviour ? We can't say that something is unnatural because it exists in nature and a lot of animals use this kind of behaviour. For example lot of people critized homosexuality and say that's unnatural but infanticide, necrophilic behaviour are used by some animals. comments of the presentation : we know that reproduction requires cooperation to succeed ? In many situations only one sex can gain fitness (increased transmission of genes). This disparity between sexes imposes different pressure between males and females. Males increase their fitness by mating frequently and so increase the chances that their sperm will encounter a rare egg. On the other side, females evolved mechanisms for choosing the fathers of their children, while males have often evolved mechanisms for gaining access to females and their eggs. Why homosexuality ? There are scientific evidence that people who are attracted to others of the same sex develop their orientation before they are born : it exists an association between same-sex orientation in men and a specific chromosomal region. Females have two X-chromosomes, one of which is inactive. In some mothers who have homosexual sons there is a problem in the inactivation of these X-chromosomes : a region on the X-chromosome may be implicated in determining sexual orientation. The environnement (drugs, medicine, toxic coumpounds) have in a second part an impact on it and may interfere with a pregnant woman's hormonal system and so modified her sex hormone and may have an impact on DNA. Opening paragraph of your presentation : Heterosexuality is , for a lot of human qualified as a norm in the world, but it is an anthropomorphism view People often claim that certain things are wrong or that certain actions should not be done because doing so would be “unnatural : that comes from our society. Animal sexual behaviour takes many different forms, even within the same species. I ll take some example of what happens in nature with animals sexualities example : sexual coercion, infanticide, sexual cannibalism, necrophilic copulation?: why is there some crual act in nature ? Are there scientific explanations ?
