A l'école, je dois faire un exposé sur un sujet au choix. J'ai chois le judo car j'aime beaucoup ce sport.

Today I'm going to speak about a sport that I really enjoy, judo.

I began judo when I was 5 years old. I practice judo in a club in Morges once or twice a week and there are sometimes tournaments on weekends.

I have now the brown belt.

In my presentation I will first talk about the history of judo and the moral code, then I will speak of the uniform of the judoka, of the places where he trains.

Next I will talk about the grades and the rules and finally I will end with the techniques of judo.

History

Judo is a martial art created in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. The judo derived from Japanese jujitsu. Jigoro Kano, who practised Jujitsu, developed new techniques. His goal was to create a martial art that could be used by all people, regardless of their size or strength.

The word judo comes from a Japanese word that literally means "soft way".

By observing a snowy tree, Jigoro Kano noticed something.

The biggest branches had broken under the weight of the snow, contrary to the most flexible which only folded ! So the most flexible can surpass the strongest.

Judo was the first Japanese martial art to gain international recognition, and the first to become an official Olympic sport. Actually judo is the 3rd largest sport in the world. Judo practitioners are called judoka.

Moral code

Judo is well known for having a strong moral code that includes values like sincerity, respect, self-control, courage, modesty, honor, friendship and politeness.

Uniform of the judoka

The Judo is practised in a uniform called a judogi. It's constituted by a pants and by a jacket. Judogi are usually white, but some are blue.

The Judoka also wears a belt which depends on its grade.

Judoka begin with white belts and then progress to yellow, orange, green, blue, brown and black belts.

After the black belt there is also a white and red belt, then a red belt and finally a large white belt. The colour of this last belt means that there is always something to learn.

There are also intermediate belts for judokas who are not old enough to pass the superior belt. In this case the belt has two colours. The colours of the grade of the judoka and the colour of the next grade.

For example: a white-yellow belt, an yellow-orange belt and so on.
