Gene Manipulation : Advantages/drawbacks

Bonjour,

Je suis en lycée agricole, et ma professeur d'anglais m'a demandée de répondre à la question suivante : "Do the advantages of gene manipulation outweight risks ?"

Je passerai dans 2 jours l'oral et ma prestation sera évaluée.

J'ai réuni quelques idées que j'ai organisées dans un texte.

Est-ce que quelq'un aurait la gentillesse de me signaler les fautes que j'ai commises ?

For 30 years now, scientists have been able to create in-vitro embryos. Today, originating human life seems to be within geneticist's reach. That's why, we are going to answer to one particular question : do the advantages of gene manipulation outweight risks ?

At first sight, genetic engineering may seem beneficial for humanity. Indeed, it can solve infertility problems and people who can't have children could have recourse to in vitro fertilization. Furthermore, it can help doctors and scientists to diagnose serious diseases and then to provide specific treatments. Genetic engineering could also help those who might be afraid of having a disabled child. Indeed, it would enable parents to chose their baby's future features and abilities : that's to say, genetics would allow parents to get the flawless child they mah have wished to have in their dreams.

However, genetic engineering is not risk-free and could cause serious problem when getting out of control... Gene manipulation first raises serious ethical aspects. Human beings should normally not interfere with nature : thanks to sciences, scientists would be able to select the healthiest embryos, which is eugenics' starting point. Moreover, when selecting the healthiest embryos, who is to choose ? who is to eliminate ? who would be so almighty to get the right to decide wheather the embryos are to be killed or not...

Second, genetic engineering raises worrisome economic concerns. Indeed, gene manipulation is costly : people have to pay for their children to be flawless. That's to say, the wealthiest the parents, the more gifted the children... Gene manipulation could then become a “black market”, in which money would be more important than human beings.

Third, genetic engineering could led to the emergence of a new society, in which an elite group would govern and subjugate naturally conceived people, who would then be treated as sub-humans. Gene manipulation would then led people to live in a society, in which artificial procreation would be the mainstream ; let's say, the “stantard” proceedings. This would then be a totalitarian country, in which naturel conception would no longer be supported.

Gene manipulation, in spite of being a great medical progress, has to many risks that would, in the long run, jeopardize the safety of humanity. The answer to our question is then NO : the advantages of genetic engineering definitely don't outweight the risks.
