This document is a recent coloured cartoon by the Japonese No-Rio, published in 2004 by the NIHON KEIZAI SHIMBUN news paper, one of the most- weekly-magazine read in Japan. Concerning the topic, this deals with traditional arts and crafts in the four famous Asiatic islands. For a start, the general layout is composed of three major components. At first, in the foreground, two characters are depicted : on the one hand , in the middle, a men in his eighties, working hardly to sculpt a kind of wooden wheel, and only dressed with a black cloth; the other, younger, from about forty years, wearing a dark suit with glasse, and carrying a suitcase. Next, in the middle and in the background, the setting seems to represent a traditional Japonese landscape, refined and beautifully coloured, principally composed of vegetation , fields, and .a snowed-up montain. To finish, this document shows two last components next to the cartoon; the title, at the top, a renewed interest for traditional arts and crafts in Japan, and the caption, translating the Japonese words inside the ballon, meaning “ would you please accept me like an apprentice?”, and constituying in this way a final information to help us understand this document. Effectively, what we have here is a topical matter : it doesnt simply deal with arts and crafts in Japan, what’s more, in accordance with the text published with, as well as the caption, we know it’s about a strange phenomenon, according to, more and more young Japoneses are choosing to come back to manual jobs, because of an unattractive employment situation, where the unemployment rate has been boosted by 13, 2 %. However, looking at the various components, we get the feeling that, by drawing this cartoon, the author didn’t only intend to illustrate objectively a current event. Effectively, there is a sharp contrast between the two characters : whereas the first one, in the middle, an eighty-year-old man, working hardly in a kind of wooden wheel, gives the feeling to merge with the setting, the other, in the bottom right-hand corner, looking occidentaly, really appears like an intruder. The way they're dressed, they're drawn, their position, their haircut, their expression; everything shows us a will of bringing into relief a contrast, surely in position of the cartoonist's message. As a result, it obviously alludes to two different worlds, nearly opposite : on the one hand, a modern society, symbolized by the younger man, constrained (by, from, of?) outputs, and a socioeconomic development, on the other hand, an older one, represented by the second man, where tradition, arts and crafts pace people life. So, what therefor No-Rio wants us to realize? That buisnessmen and manual jobs are incompatible? That doing arts and crafts is not as easy as most people tend to believe? Anyway, this cartoon rings definitively a bell, in that everybody cannot do everything : are we finally suited for a particular job? And, to what extent, for a special social statut? On the one hand, some people would think no matter you’re suited for a job, you’ll forever had to work where you background would dictate (to) you (?), this, resulting from the fact that, ever since you’ve been baby, you’ve been locked up in a specific social rank. In this way, they would illustrate their opinion ginving an example of these rich people who enrol their children at” rallies”, kind of private dancing clubs, including only people of a certain social class, to make them meet, and –why not?- marying lawyers’ or doctors’ sons and daughters, but also to make them finding their way in engineering or political careers... On the other hand, some would believe in the power of passion human beings are filled with, which, according to them, always wins on social barriers. They woud hold up as an example Mister Moliere, a French and very famous playwright, who refused at the age of 14, to follow his father, being in his turn, one of the rey’s upholsterers. Effectively, instead of modeling him on a special social statut, he felt he was really suited for drama, and chose to follow his passion. To sum up, in both case, determination and will are necessary to manage at work. Nevertheless, if daring, to follow our real calling, may be harder, it most probably represent a key of hapiness. ….
