Voici l'article de départ: School fights drugs with sniffer dog April '99: A headteacher in England took the drastic step of employing a sniffer dog toprevent drug abuse at his school. Two 15-year-old boys at Bramhall High School in Stockport,Greater Manchester, had already been found by Scuba the Labrador to be in possession ofcannabis, and had been suspended from lessons. The Headteacher, John Peckham, said he reserved the right to continue with the spot checks. He believed his school was the first in the UK to copy a practice used widely in theUnited States. He denied that using the sniffer dog would send out the message that hisschool suffered badly from drug abuse. "Every school in the country has a problem with drugs – ours is no better or worse than any other," said Mr Peckham. "We see this as being part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce the harm that drugs cause to young people. Just as the fear of breath tests deters many adults from drinking and driving, so the very remote possibility of being caught in school with an illegal drug will also act as a deterrent for many young people." He added that although there had been a couple of letters of complaint from concernedparents, the response had been broadly favourable. BBC News Online, Monday May 24th, 1999. 1/ Write a short summary of the article, concentrating on the problem raised. To sum up quickly this article, we can say that this is a true story about an English school headmaster who in April 1999 decided to organize spot checks to possess drugs with the help of a dog. According to him, the establishment of this system does not reflect a high consumption of drugs in his school but is only a preventive measure. The question can be asked here is whether the clampdown on drugs is the role of a headteacher ? 2/ Give your personal opinion as if you were sitting for your oral exam. From my point of view, this is not the role for a headteacher to organize these controls about drug possession. Indeed, the primary role of a school headmaster is to provide education. The latter can only organize preventative measures on illegal substances and did not hold checks. If he believes that drug trafficking takes place in his school, he can contact the authorities to enforce the law. In my opinion, this spot checks can break the bond of trust between students and the educational system. The school should be a place of peace, security, education and teaching, not punishment.
