Economy of Russia

A long time ago Russia is a great power. So after the Second World War the Soviet Union is recognized as superpower. Today, the successor state of the former Soviet Union, Russia, is a member of the Group of Eight (G8) industrialized nations and a member of the BRIC, emerging market countries which quickly develop.

We will begin by a short presentation of the Russia, then we will speak about key sectors of Russian economy and finally, we speak about foreign relations.

1. Presentation

Since 1999, Russia has a significant economic growth. That's why it is currently the eighth largest economy in the world by nominal GDP. The country records an average economic growth of 7% per year thanks to high energy prices, oil and gas, and domestic demand. In spite of a fall during the economic crisis of 2008, GDP stays strong thanks to hydrocarbon. The growth rate in Russia increased by 6.8% in 2008

2. Key sectors of Russian economy

The Russia's growth comes above all natural resources. In fact Russia has a lot of mineral and energy resources such as oil, gas, coal, timber. The country has the world's largest natural gas reserves with 1/3(a third) of reserves, the 8th (eighth) largest oil reserves with 15%, and the second largest coal reserves with 20%. Thus Russia is the world's leading natural gas exporter and leading natural gas producer, while also the second largest oil exporter and largest oil producer, and the 6th (sixth) largest coal producer. Russia is also the world's top producer and exporter in agriculture with wheat, sunflower for example.

Moreover Russia inherited heavy industry from the Soviet Union, such as steelworks, oil refinery, chemical industry and manufactured goods but also invested in nanotechnology and information Technology.

To finish, Russia is among the world leaders in arms industry, nuclear technology, aviation and aerospace technology. Thus Russia is a military superpower. It is the world's top supplier of arms with 30% of worldwide weapons sales in 80 countries. Moreover it is one of the five countries who has nuclear weapon. It has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world with 16 000 nuclear weapons and among them 5 830 are active.

3. Foreign relations

Russia developed economic alliance with other countries in order to promote its growth. In this way Russia is a member of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) with 20 Pacific Rim countries since 1998, and Russia is the leading member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, a regional organization whose participating countries are former Soviet Republics. Moreover the country signed an agreement with European Union.

To conclude Russia is already among the most developed countries but his union with the other member of the BRIC Russia will be able to become the "locomotives of world economic growth" according to Vladimir Poutine.
