Voilà mon résumé, peut être un peu long...dsl !

The text which I am going to present is pulled by the web side Ted.com ; on this site is put on-line all the best conferences TED (Technology Entertainment Design) which is an important annual meeting of California, between public and various personalities as professors, researchers, politicians…

Its objective is " to propagate ideas " on a wide wallet of subjects as science, policy, arts, music or on world questions …

I have chosen a conference entitled “Don’t eat the Marshmallow yet!”, presented by the speaker Joachim De Posada in February 2009.

Through his speech, Joachim explains to us how the delayed gratification is an important factor of future social success by a historic experience.

A professor of psychology from Stanford has chosen 4-year-old children to experiment his idea. He has left them, only ones, in a closed room with a marshmallow each. Before, he has explained to each child that if he didn’t eat his candy after 15 minutes, he will give him another marshmallow again, that will make 2 candies for him.

Joachim de Posada explains so, that the purpose is to measure to which point a child is able to resist in front of a thing that he loves.

Observations have showed that after some seconds, minutes (going to 14 minutes and 30 seconds) or sometimes just when the door was closing, 2 children on three have eaten the marshmallow. They couldn’t resist to temptation.

The most interesting in this experience lives in the fact that one child on three has known to resist and hasn’t eaten his candy. He looks at it, he smells it, he rests, it and tries to centre his attention on another thing. The behavior of this child reveals the principle of success, which is the capacity to delay his gratification. The total abstinence is the most important factor of social success.

To confirm this conclusion, the speaker says us that 15 years later, he has refunded the children who have participated to the experience. 100% of those who had not eaten the marshmallow, had makes a success their life, them projects. While a big proportion of those who had eaten it, meets difficulties today in their personal and university life, in their relations with others.

Joachim, then, wondered if the Hispanic children would react in the same way and the conclusions were identical. Finally, he reproduced his experience in Korea. Korean has found it so interesting and ingenious that they teach henceforth the total abstinence to the children.

The speaker ends his conference with an enough funny image. He says that the United States should teach in turn this quality to their children because today their debt is enormous: indeed, they eat more Marshmallow than they produce it!
