The adventure of a French businessman

He was born the 20th November 1926, in the small village of Landernau in the West of France. He opened his first store in 1949, in a room of 16m², where he sold some biscuits but less expensive than the other retailers because he bought them directly to the producer in huge quantities.

He is now known thanks to his supermarkets, his name is Edouard Leclerc. Actually, the brand counts around 630 stores: Hypermarkets and supermarkets which is the leader in France. But before being so big, his creator had to face several steps.

After, the store in Landernau, he opened 60 shops in only 10 years. But he launched his first supermarket in 1962 with 1200m² represents the modern distribution. However, a lot of retailers which are supported by the journalists did not agree with this new way of doing business and tried to stop this expansion. All theses controversies help the brand to be popular.

Indeed, the policy of Edouard Leclerc is quite new. He thought that the goal of a shop is not to sell as expensive as possible but to sell as much people as possible. To succeed, he had to buy the products as cheap as possible to the producer. Like this, he encouraged retailers to make joint ventures to buy in huge quantities and have better prices. He also tried to cancel some French laws whose the aim were not to encourage the competition between the retailers according to him. His shops were the first to sell petrol in filling station independent, sell gold jewels or sell travels…

He was the first of taking care of its employees. Actually, 25% of the profits were given to the employees before any legal obligations. Moreover thanks to him, the brand was a pioneer in the aim of taking care of the environment. In 1995, all the supermarkets stopped to give plastic bags: the customer can buy a biodegradable bag for around 0,50 € and switch it for free if it is broken.

Edouard Leclerc is not still the president of his brand, but he tries to spread his own ideas with his son who replaced him. Thanks to him, the things have moved in the branch of the distribution but some changes are still necessary to allow a better justice between retailer and consumer.
