Not exactly. It isn't, for everyone. English is the universal language, after all. English is the most spoken language on earth so depending on where you are and what you are doing in life i think is essential. If you are in an English-speaking country, it is important to be able to communicate with the majority of people around you. In some others countries, it increases the number of jobs available to you because there is a lot of interface with those in English-speaking countries. If, however, you don't live in an English-speaking country, and you aren't concerned about getting a job, then it probably doesn't matter much. If you're in business it definitely is, since English is considered the "business" language. English is a powerful tool for global communication. If you are in a firm or an industry that requires communication with international counterparts then English is essential for your success. Other factors are to be considered to reach success such as will, desire, courage, planning, organization, intelligence, and sometimes much of luck. Thus, in America or any other predominately English-speaking country, yes. Otherwise, no. It seems to work just fine for the many millions of successful people who don't live in any of these countries.
