1. In a democracy, are people best represented by directly elected officials, or are there other ways of deciding representations?

I think in a democracy, people directly elected are good represented but not the best. In my opinion, for represented constituents, it’s necessary to have actors same MP, Lobby, Press and trade union.

2. Should an elected representative have other functions, professional or elective, outside Parliament ?

I don’t know if elected representative should have other functions outside Parliament because

on the one hand, elected representative should keep close to electors for understand elector’ matters. On the other, it’s difficult for elected representative to make correctly his job and together to have a job outside the Parliament.

3. What makes someone go into politics?

To my mind, someone go into politics must to stick up for elector’s interest, society’s interest and to do come up elector’s matters.

Comprehension :

The fats :

  • Why doesn’t the M.P. have a job oustside Parliament ?

The MP haven’t got a job outside Parliament because he thinks it isn’t possible to do the properly if he have a job outside parliament as well.

  • Say briefly how he divides his time during a day in the house.

During a day in the house, the mornings the MP read her correspondence, looks at the newspapers and dip into “Hansard”.

The House meets at 2.30 but the MP stays in the chamber until five o’clock for Question Time and the opening speeches by Ministers and Opposition spokesmen on them ain debate.

After, the MP deals with other business, meet deputations…

At nine, the MP go back into the chamber to listen to the closing speeches and take part in the division.

  • What are the reasons for absenteeism in the house?

There are three reasons:

- Firstly, the MP became mad if they listened to speeches for hours at a time.

- Secondly, the MP have got a lot of other word to do.

- Thistly, some of speeches are very boring.

  • What is the manner of voting in the house ?

- When a vote is going to be taken, the division bells ring throughout the building.

- So, MP rushes into the chamber to vote by walking trough the Aye lobby or the Non lobby.

- Then, tellers ticked off our names and give the results to the speaker.

  • On what occasions may an MP vote freely ? Can you think of other matters than the one he mentions where a free vote might be possible ?

MP vote freely when the government’s majority is tiny. I think there are free votes on local’s matter.

  • What are the different ways constituents keep in touch with their MP ?

Constituents keep in touch with their MP by many ways:

- stopping MP in the street

- making meeting

- writing long letters

- deputations coming up to London

- presence lobbies in the house

  • What sort of dilemmas may MPs face from time to time ?

Time to time, in the same post, MP may be asked to support both teetotallers and brewers.

  • What de you think of the way this MP sees his role

I think the MP has an idealistic vision of his role because he not referred to mercredi political corruption, political’ personal interest …

Your opinion

  • “Democracy subsites emection by the incompetent many for appointment by the corrupt few”. What do you think of these words of George Bernard Shaw ?

A la nomination d'une petite minorité corrompue, la démocratie substitue l'élection par une masse incompétente.

I’m not agree with George Bernard Shaw because to my mind electors are not incompetent. Indeed, electors represented the nation, the country. The democracy’ s goal is to allow election of people who represented the interest of the majority of the people by citizens.

  • And how does that compare with the following words by Abraham Lincoln: “ You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time ?

«Vous pouvez tromper quelques personnes tout le temps. Vous pouvez tromper tout le monde un certain temps. Mais vous ne pouvez tromper tout le monde tout le temps.»

I’m totally agree with the followings words by Abraham Lincoln. The perfect example of these words is the Second World War. Indeed, Hitler can fool all the people some of the time, and dome of people all the time, but he can’t fool all the people all the time.

  • On government, Disraeli said: “No Government can be long secure without a formidable opposition” . Do you agree ? I’m totally agree because opposition is a requirement inherent in the concept of parliamentary democracy. Opposition must informed and controlled the government’s action.
