Intro

There are three weeks, we could celebrated Halloween . This is a holiday celebrated on the night of October thirty one. The term Halloween is shortened from All-hallow-even, as it is the eve of "All Hallows' Day", which is now also known as All Saints' Day. During this day, the traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses" and carving jack-o-lanterns. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century. Halloween is now celebrated in several parts of the Western world, most commonly in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico and occasionally in parts of Australia and New Zealand. Now, we're going to present you the source of this celebration, the tradition in the United Kingdom and France, the symbols and then the controversy surrounding this.

United Kingdom

Halloween celebrations in United Kingdom were popularised in the late twentieth century under the pressure of American cultural influence, including a large number of films and television programmes aimed at children and adolescents and the discovery by retail experts of a marketing opportunity to fill the empty space before Christmas. Between 2001 and 2006, consumer spending in the UK for Halloween increase from twelve million pounds to one hundred and twenty million pounds, making Halloween the third most profitable holiday for supermarkets. This led to the introduction of practices such as pumpkin carvings and trick-or-treat. Nowadays, adults too may dress up to attend costume parties, pub parties and club parties on Halloween night. Other practices common to Halloween include fireworks, telling ghost stories, and playing children's games such as hide-and-seek. In addition to sweets, apple tarts may be baked with a coin hidden inside, and nuts of all types were eating during Halloween. Some children may in some areas play a game called "thunder and lightning", which involves loudly knocking on a neighbour's door, then running away. This game is known as "knocky nine doors" in the north east of England, "knock-door-run" in parts of the country. However, traditions are being lost under the relentless pressure of the American media and some of today's children will arrive at a door and intone "trick-or-treat" in order to receive money and sweets.

France

Halloween reached in France in 1997. The majority of French criticized this celebation because it was an American and English tradition and so it was only an "operation marketing". However, halloween acquired a popular's support and supermarkets introduced this in their department with sweets, costumes, mask.... Since 2005, this celebration was abandoned and some news paper runed as a headline "Halloween is dead" but the shop were always full in objects of this celebration. In 2007, the failure of Halloween increased : no decoration in the street, no publicity at the television or in paper. Only children would like to Halloween become a celebration lasting.

Controversy

But Halloween instigate controversy about religion, because this celebration is between two Christian's celebrations "All Saint's Day" and the "Memorial Day" so the church denounce this infatuation and since 2002, the diocèse of Paris etablished a manifestation nammed "Holy wins" (what is saintly is victorious). Most of one hundred people join it every year. Moreover, halloween is also a source of insecurity because this celebration take place the evening and some rumors said that malevolent's people introduce needles into sweets, so police make a free inspection of sweets ; until now there is'nt a real case of wound. This rumors make that parents follow their children in their round of sweets, for be sur of their security. Well, there has been increasing concern about the potential for antisocial behaviour, particularly among older teenagers. Cases of houses being "egg-bombed", especially when the occupants do not give money or gifts, have been reported, and the BBC reported that for Halloween 2006 police forces stepped up patrols to respond to such mischief.
