It deals with the new coming of a brown family in a district England where foreigners aren’t welcome. So they want to be integrated in this society. I’m going to read from line 1 to line 12 because it is the description of the brown family who is very courageous to try to have a place in this district. The text can be divided into 3 parts : - From line 1 to line 25 : the narrator makes a description of the west indian family through the eyes of the little girl who is probably at the doorstep or behind a window of her house. She seems to be surprised and very thrilled of this new coming because she wants to make new friends. - From line 26 to line 45 : no sooner had she seen her new neighbors than she decides to tell her father who passes his time in a Polish coffee, they have new neighbors. In this part, the narrator informs us of the girl’s parents past. Indeed, they have fled the poland because of the war. Their past is a burden for them. - From line 46 to the end : contrary to his daughter, he seems to be worried of this new coming. He forbids his daughter to have contacts with them and we see how disappointed the little girl is. We can see that the narrator is outside of the story because he gives us the little girl’s point of view, he’s omnicient. On the one hand, the little girl is very happy of this moving in. Indeed she doesn’t look the apparence of people and so she might be disappointed with her father’s reaction because through her eyes we see admiration toward the new family. She is positively prejudiced. She disagrees with the opinion of her poppy and so she probably wishes he had been more open-minded like her. On the other hand, her father has preconceives ideas about west indian. As opposed to his daughter, he forbid her to have contacts with the west indian, he doesn’t want his daughter to have problem. To conclude, I think this document is a good text because it shows us how the immigrants were persecuted in districts in England. The author denunces the racism of societies. Before to speak at someone, people look apparences, so it shows the narrow minded of society. salut!!!!! :P
