When all british women obtained the right to vote in 1928, Maud was 40years old and her son George was a young adult, so just over the age of a legal majority. Maud had always dreamed of getting in touch with him. Imagine a letter to George explaining what happened in 1912 and what she had been fighting for. Mon travail: My child, my life, Here is now more than ten years since I have no news of you. Ah...my beautiful little boy grows well, you're a young adult now. I dreamed many times to write you, and entrance in touch with you, to tell you and to show you how I missed you. It's important for me to explain you why I was reject by your life while you when were so young, why I fought and I still fight for the rights of the women. It is necessary to begin somewhere, so.. Since I was seven years, I worked in an industrial laundry in London. When I was 24 years old, I was a young woman without story, discreet and invested in my work with the establishment. I worked hard, but I possessed a «good» place in the company. I even met your father there. But, everything began in 1912, when I found myself at the heart of a riot, with women who launched missiles on the shop windows of stores. By leaving, I recognized Violet Miller, a colleague of the laundry. I had just met for the first time the activists for women's suffrage.. Later, I attended a speech of a suffragette, she incited the women to testify in front of the Parliament, to obtain the voting right of the women. Violed had volunteered, but her husband had struck her. I was interested more and more in Suffragettes, and it's me who spoke in Parliament. I told my own experience, which I worked since I was a child, in dificult conditions and that I was exploited and I won much less than a man... The sexual abuses were frequent in the laundry.. After, Suffragettes and me waited impatiently the verdict. When we learned that the answer was negative, everyone screaming and the crowd was agitated. The policemen did not hesitate to use the strenght, a power and to show themselves violent, only because we defended the rights of the women. I was stopped during a week, with Violet, Alice, Edith and me. You know, George, I just dreamed about a better world. At that time the life of the women were difficult. The activists, called Suffragettes wanted be listened in the society, we just wanted simply the equality between the gender. But Sonny did not agree, he was angry and was ashamed of me in front of his neighbors and colleagues. I wanted to stop frequenting Suffragettes but when I went to the secret gathering and attended the speech of Emmeline Pankhurst, the famous leader of the movement WSPU, everything changed. It was the first time when I met a woman so strong, when I felt so alive. The hope of a better life, made me little by little a rebel become. I was again arrested, but your father refused to be allowed return home and to see you. I continued to work, even if I missed you a lot. But when I was declared Suffragette in the newspaper, I was stared by everyone at work. To avenge me, of all the sexual abuses on me and the other girls of the laundry, I have voluntarily, deliberately, burn the hand of my boss. I will always remember this day, the most horrible of my life, where Sonny made the decision to make you adopt. I don't know if you remember.. I loved you and I love you George, I have never wanted that you are adopted. I promis. I hope that you had a good family, which it is good to occupy of you. But never anybody will love you as I love you, and I hope that I remain your mom. For this day, I had nothing to lose. I'm involved in the militant acts of Suffragettes, I participated in the explosion of letterboxes, a parliamentary residence. I slept alone, in the cold. I wanted that the government recognizes the right of the mothers, to get back you. I wanted to have the same salary as the man, to be equal to him. It is you which gave me the strength to fight. I really became a suffragette. To be finally heard, the girls and me wanted to hit hard. So with Alice, we went to the Derby Epsom, to meet King George V. But, Alice, went behind security gates where horses race took place. You know the continuation, it was made killed by a racehorse, with a banner evoking Suffragettes in hands. It was a tragic moment, I had just lost my friend. But our movement could able to appear to the newspaper, and we were heard by the society. In the 1925, the law recognized a mother's rights over a children and all british women obtained the right to vote in 1928. This is one of my greatest pride after you. I am now an editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Life of Women", and I have an affectionate husband, who helps me and supports me in my fight for the equality. I would like to meet you, part of your life. If you do not want, I understand.. Written me to know what you think, if you need to know something else, if you want to ask me questions.
