The notion of progress

« Gender equality ? »

How have women changed their situation over time ?

I-             How was it in the past and why women fought ?

II-           Current situation

Introduction

I’m going to talk about the notion of progress and give a definition. The progress is a gradual betterment, especially the progressive development of mankind. We can ask ourselves, how have women changed their situation over time ? In a first part, I will present the situation in the past and why women fought. In a second part, I will show the changes that there has been during the last two centuries.

                    Développement

Since years and years, women are inferior in society compared with men in various fields. For example, for men, women are made to stay at home, raise children and take care of the house. They don’t have the right to work freely, speak in church or be implicated in politic. This vision of women are stereotypes. Women want to be equal to men, they want to be independent, able to work and do what they decide to do ! For many years, women were dependent on their father or their husband and were therefore not free.

Now, were are going to talk about the evolution of gender equalities. From 1869, women began to want to be heard and make things moving. Indeed, that year, the Suffragettes have made their first demonstrations to make themselves heard and New Zealand was the first country to allow women to vote in 1893. In 1932, women push limits of aviation with the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, Amelia Earhart. From 1940, women shoulder the economy and in 1963 Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to go in space. Indira Gandhi has also redefined politics by becoming the first Indian woman to be elected Prime Minister.

               Conclusion

It’s disturbing because the progress that women have made doesn’t allow an improvrment of society because of stereotype. It’s surprising but we’ve used to seeing women like that. The message is that, despite a lot of progress, women are still stereotyped and not equal to men.
