Mythes and Heroes

Cons and icons

How a character can become a national figure ?

  1. History of coins

  2. Celebrities on banknotes

  3. Example of an hero

Introduction :

I am going to talk about the notion of myths and heroes. First of all, I’m going to give the definition of a myth and a hero.

A myth is a story that may or may not be true. Mythology includes the legends of our history, our religions, stories of how the world was created, and our heroes. These stories have great symbolic power, so this may be a major reason why they have survived for such a long time, sometimes for thousands of years. A hero is a person who is admired for his courage, achievements, or noble qualities. It can be any character. So we can ask us how a character can become a national figure.

In a first part, we are going to speak about the history of coins, after that, we will talk about celebrities on banknotes, and to finish, we are going to give an example of a character who deserves to appear on.

  1. History of coins

To my mind the document that best seems to illustrate the first part is “The History of the British Pound”. In fact, it’s told that Henry VII issued the pound coin in 1489 to unify the country. The pound sterling was born 1200 years ago and is considered as the oldest currency in the world. We can found the pound sterling in different parts of the United Kingdom like in Northern Ireland, The Isle of Man and others. The design is different depending on where the money was printed but accepted throughout the United Kingdom.

Queen Elizabeth II appears on all coins’ “face” side and represent the monarchy. She is looking on the right, which symbolize the stability of the British Monarchy. On the “tail” side, different elements like the thistle or the Lion represent some region of the UK. The crown holds all the regions of the UK together which represents the power, the domination and unify the British Monarchy.

  1. Celebrities on banknotes

In this second part, we will describe banknotes using the "British currency" document. So, on the first side, we can see Queen Elizabeth II, the name of the Bank, the value of the banknote and security features. On the second side, we can see different famous people depending on the banknote’s value. For example, Elizabeth Fry, a social reformer from the XVIII th century, and who improved the situation of female prisoners and homeless people, appears on 5£ banknotes. We can also find others well-known people with a few illustrations related to their life like Charles Darwin, James Watt or Adam Smith.

All these people have somehow contributed to make evolve the Britain

  1. Example of an hero who deserve to be on banknotes

Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales, was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales. She was an incredible women and I think she is the perfect women to become the next face on 20£ banknotes.

It’s in the middle 80s that Lady Di starting to take seriously her role as an ambassador of several associations. The princess is depicted as a leading celebrities interested by diseases such as AIDS and leprosy.

By its status, Lady Di was so expected in hospitals, schools, and museums. She became one of the first public figures to touch the HIV patients, proving the world that they are absolutely not contagious. She helped poor children in Africa and was alongside many personalities such as Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama. I’m sure that everybody remember her.

I think Diana Spencer was a truly remarkable woman. So I’m sure that put her face on 20£ banknotes is the best way to honor her and leave a trace of her existence and of what she has done.

Conclusion :

To conclude, a character can be a national figure and appear on banknotes for her achievements or qualities. The British currency unifies the country and allowing his heroes to be honored. Lady Di is a well-known personality and she is considered like an hero, so I think she could be on banknotes.
