Bonjour, j'ai réalisé mes deux synthèses sur Espaces et échanges et Idée de progrès, je voulais donc savoir si elles étaient correctes.

Spaces and exchanges

 

I am going to talk about the notion Spaces and exchanges. First, I would like to define some terms in relation to the topic studied in class this year. The term « space » refers to a territory occupated by people. A exchange is an act of giving and receiving something else in return. Through flows of trade, communication and migration, the country can exchange, and that since a long time. People can take the most of these exchanges thanks to spaces. We may wonder in which aim all forms of exchanges are realized through the world ? To answer this questions, I have chosen the following documents : Alejandro Peres, Candido and Spanglish.

 

First, Alejandro Peres is an interview of an immigrant in the united Staes, who migrated from the outskirts of Mexico city for many reasons. In mexico, he worked as a car mechanic and earned 600 pesos a month, it was not sufficient for his family. Whereas in the United States, there is a lot of jobs available for unskilled workers, you can benefit of material confort, a better life expectancy, excellent med facilities, better prospects and a good education for you children. So, the american dream is still alive and you can find a way out of poverty living in the United States. There is also the Mexican dream, that consist in going to The USA, improve in and when you are retire go back to Mexico. The document is related with the notion Spaces and exchanges because Alejandro crossed the border between the Usa and Mexico. He did that in order to have a better life, where Alejandro will know new people, new culture and a new life, that it is a type of exchange.

 

The second document is a text, it deals with the difficult way to achieve to change his life for a Mexican. It is the story of Candido, Manuela and other mexicans who are in the Arizona's desert with smuglers because they prefered migrate illgaly in the United states and also be helped to cross the border. They paid 15 dollars and had harsh travelling conditions.In the second part of the text, the smugglers pretend a breakdown , so the migrants were stranded in the desert. They died one by one except Candido, his sister Manuela , died, because of the lack of water and endured pains. It is in relation with the notion because they wanted to cross a vague space : the desert where they could exchange some inquietude with other Mexicans and also wanted to know a new culture and begin a new american life in the United States.

 

Spanglish is the last document, it is a poster composed of a glass of iced tea by McDonald's the american multinational and a motto which is “ Sweet tea only one dollar muy frio”. This billboard diffused in the subway, in the city center of megalopoles, signifiy that the American and the spanish culture are mixed bcause the society is composed of english speaker and spanish speaker who are the migrants from Mexico and the America latina. In order to adapt their add to the society, they mix the two languages that everybody understand. The document is in relation with the notion spaces and exchanges because the migrants change of country but they save the same language, so their culture traverse countries thanks to multinationals present in the worldwilde and the americans can also discover the latino's culture.

 

 

In a nutshell, the migrants change of coutry and accept to surrender difficulties to have a better life such as cross the US-Mexico border to realize the american dream. Thanks to this change they can share different cultures through the spaces and have a better acknowledge of the world. In changing of country, it bring a culture that is mix to the first culture of the world, it is a kind of globalization.

 

 

 

 

Idée de progrès

 

I am going to talk about the notion of progress. First, I would like dfine some terms of the notion studied in class this year. The progress is a develpoment towards a better, more completeor more modern condition. It consists in believing that the world can become better in termos of art, science, technology, medicine. It implies also changes which is not necessarly approved of all and maybe criticized by some people. In order to lead our study we have to know if the progress is always beneficial ? To answer this question, I have chosen the following documents: the video Climate change, a drawing and a text.

 

Climate change is a video, it deals with the consequences that the green house effect has on the earth and on the human being. As a result, carbon dioxide from fossil fuel is made. The video illustrates the notion of progress because all the new technologies we use (cell phones, cars, TV) are not beneficial for the earth and are making the earth warmer, usines are arising, there are more floods. The today's use of forms of progress would be reduced thanks to new innovations who seems helping the reduce of the global warming such as solar panels, wind turbine, electric cars.

 

The second document is a drawing which represents 4 men who look exactly the same and another: he's tiny, short, pale and his hands and feet are too big for his body. Therefore, he is being rejected and put in a bin with other clones. The ideal clones has dark curly hair, is tanned, has white teeth and wel-built. There are considered as manufactured goods it as a mass production. So, cloning is dehumanized. The document is in relation with the notion because cloning is a scientific progress and it is used as an improvement for the human being. But in a clone 's society, there will be only perfect people and the flaws are rejected. This cartoon shows that there should be some limits to scientific progress.

 

The third document is a text, it talks about a family who had to appeal to the PGD ( pre-implantation genetic diagnosis) to save her daughter. In fact, Molly has a rare ilness called "Fanconi's anemia". The PGD consists in modifying an embryo's DNA. choose some features of his baby such as eye color, his personality and choose the blood group, and the baby won't have AIDS or another illness thanks to this technology. Their parents decided to use PGD to give birth to an healthy baby who can cure her sister by an transplant. The story of Molly illustrates the notion of Progress because PGD is used as a technique that allows to heal someone of a disease if we can transplant blood cells. It used also new technologies, a form of progress.

 

 

In a nutshell, we can say that progress has advantages and drawbacks. On one hand, progress is beneficial such as PGD because it has a medical goal. On the other hand, it can be harmful because it is considered as unethical. If Progress continue, two groups of people will be considered one who profite of this progress and the other who doesn't use it. The first group can have bad effects on the earth and on the relation between the human being because they will reject the other group.
