Bonsoir,

Merci d'avance,

PS: Je préfère vous joindre mon doc.

Introduction

As you know, during next summer, the Olympic Games will take place in Beijing, capital city of China. In 2001, the International Olympic Committee elected Beijing as the host city for the 29th Olympic Games to the detriment of cities as Toronto, Paris or Istanbul.

During the election, a couple of voices had first-mentioned the human rights problems in China. It's the first time China is elected as the host city of the Olympic Games. In 1993, Beijing had lost the 2000 Summer Olympics to Sidney.

Logo hijack

On August 3rd the Olympic Games logo was unveiled in a ceremony in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. The open arms of the calligraphic word invite people all over the world to discover the Chinese culture.

However, with the presentation of this logo, a sort of propaganda war began between graphic artists throughout the world in order to denounce the Chinese system or to support the Olympic Games.

Some organizations characterized as Human Rights spearheads like Amnesty International, Reporters Sans Frontières have used the medias so as to hijack the Olympic Games symbol, the five rings…

Here you can see some Olympic Games logos hijacked by graphic artists...

Olympic Games boycott has never been too intense for ages... We are going to see what the boycott causes and pros & cons arguments are.

Pros and Cons arguments

First of all, Olympic Games boycott seems to be the citizen of the world's choice. Some famous persons such as Steven Spielberg and the Hollywood majority have decided to boycott the Games. Some American senators, sportsmen followed the lead of Spielberg, who has decided to pull back from the opening and closing ceremony of the Games.

There are also many petitions which are circulating, and which contain signatures of such Nobel Prize laureate for Peace as Desmond Tutu.

The reproaches list to China is rather lengthy and spectacular.

China gives an economical and political hand to Sudan which is responsible for the war in Darfur ( 400.000 dead people and 205 million refugees.

  • Chinese don't have fundamental social laws

  • Death penalty is institutionalized

  • Torture may occur frequently

  • Use of Laogai which are prison Labor >> More than 4000 camps counted. Prisoners are forced to work, to export products as black tea, asbestos, black powder or chemicals. And, if the product is a poor quality product, the prisoner is battered!

  • There is no freedom of the press.

  • There is no trade unionism

  • China is responsible for Uyghur people (Chinese with Turkish origins)

  • Tibet Occupancy

And… What are the pros arguments?

We have to think of the sportsmen who have been training for 4 years. Participating in the Olympic Games for an athlete is an apotheosis.

  • The Games will provide a world stage in which the extraordinary development that China has achieved in the past 15 years will be self evident

  • Beijing is one of the world's safest cities, an incredible fact given its size.

  • China has an excellent record in the fight against drugs in sport, with 100% of tested athletes at the Sydney Olympics being completely clean

Would a boycott be really useful ?

Yes, it would.

The graphic artists'goal was to avoid that China tries to make a political profit from the Olympic Games ceremony, forgetting the numerous Chinese government's infringements of the Human Rights.

While boycotting the Olympic Games, organizations make us aware of the Chinese government dangerousness, the Human Rights problems.

Moreover, when China was elected as the host country, they said they were going to make an effort about Human Rights respect. However, the crackdown of Tibetan demonstrations showed that China didn't respect its commitment.

A similar boycott took place at the time of the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980. It was launched by the United States so as to protest against the Afghanistan invasion by the USSR in 1979.

Four years later, the Russians turned the tables on the USA, boycotting the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles about security reasons…

All that to say a boycott in Beijing will not make a big difference about the Tibetan situation, as the one of Moscow had changed anything.

Of course, the Boycott in Moscow didn't permit getting out soviet tanks from Afghanistan but all the same, it had some positive effects.

The first good news was there was no positive athlete to anti-doping tests. The sports milieu was not stained.

The second one was these Olympic Games took place just like other non-boycotted Olympic Games: sponsors and the medias don't always follow the public opinion.

Boycott Actions?

In March 2008, high-ranking politicians declared they would not attend the opening ceremony. The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, was the first world political leader to take this decision. Because of Tibet riots in March 2008, the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, said all options are conceivable about his opening ceremony participation. Concerning the Japanese government, the Royal Family decided to not attend the opening ceremony because of the Tibet events. Other politicians took this decision such as Gordon Brown, the United Nations first-secretary Ban Ki-Moon.

The boycott also organized within enterprises: a Japanese craftsman Masahisa Tsujitanito refused to produce anything for the Beijing Games to protest against China's Tibet policy.

The Japanese Buddhist temple Zenkö Ji which was originally scheduled to be the starting point for the Olympic torch relay decided to not host the torch and pulled out the relay plans. Days after, the temple was vandalized with spray-paint ...

What are the consequences of the boycott?

First of all, there will be economical consequences: boycotting China means boycotting a new world power. As a consequence, it could lead to a boycott of European products and companies by the Chinese.

France has already seen it with its business ventures implanted in China. A call to boycott the French hypermarket Carrefour from May 1st has been organized, accusing the company's major shareholder of donating funds to the Dalai Lama.

There were also calls to extend the boycott to French luxury goods and cosmetic products. Some demonstrators burned French flags, some others added Nazism's swastika to the French flag in front of French consulates and embassy.

Secondly, there could be political consequences as relations cooling-off between Western Europe and China about environment, partnerships etc...

Conclusion

To conclude, boycotting the Olympic Games is not the better solution to put a stop to the situation in Tibet. The Tibetan problem is not a new one. It will have been necessary to wait till the Beijing Olympic Games so as to see the public opinion becoming alarmed… It's too late!

If a boycott took place, the first deprived people would be the professional athletes who have been training for years. The Olympic Games opening ceremony puts worldwide politicians together. Boycotting the opening ceremony would be a powerful sign showing the international community disagreement about the Chinese system.
